Find out everything you need to know about Star Wars: The Force Awakens before you go to the movie theater on the 18th. Characters, locations, factions and where our heroes stand right before the events of Episode VII.
Timeline Episode VII: The Force Awakens is set approximately 30 years after the Battle of Endor (Episode VI: Return of the Jedi). Planets & Locations Seven locations have been seen so far in TV spots and trailers: a desert planet, an ice planet, a castle in a forest next to a lake, the Resistance base and The Starkiller base plus 2 other locations, one with Kylo Ren after a nighttime attack, and another were the First Order Stormtroopers are storming a village. Lucasfilm Ltd. revealed the names of the planets where the events of The Force Awakens happen. But what we don't know yet is which planet goes with each location, except for Jakku which is the desert planet. The names of the planets are: Jakku, Takodana, D’Qar and Hosnian Prime. According to some Lego toys, a big battle happens onTakodana. The Starkiller base and the ice planet seem to be one and the same. The Starkiller base is said to have a weapon capable of destroying entire solar systems. It is bigger and more powerful than its predecessor, the Death Star. Factions - The New Republic: As explained in the book Aftermath (Chuck Wendig, 2015), Mon Mothma, with the help of the Rebel Alliance, established the New Republic. It resembles the Republic as it was before The Clone Wars, with a very small and limited army. - The Resistance: It's a military group that doesn't answer to the New Republic. At the beginning of Episode VII, The First Order and the Resistance are at each other's throats and are ready to go to war. It is believed that Princess Leia started the Resistance to compensate for the lack of military power in the New Republic. - The First Order: We don't know the exact details yet, but we know that the First Order was formed with the remnants of the Empire. They have control of the Starkiller base, but it is not known why they haven't used it until the events of The Force Awakens. It resembles the Empire in their use of Stormtroopers, Star Destroyers, and Tie fighters. - Knights of Ren: Kylo Ren, who seems to be the main antagonist in this episode of the saga, is not a Sith. He belongs to an order called the Kights of Ren. Not much is known about them before the events of the movie. The book Aftermath makes reference to a group of darksiders that identify themselves as "acolytes of the beyond." It is believed that they have a connection to the Knights of Ren. Read more about this in our previous article.

He is very powerful with the dark side of the Force, but apparently is not in complete control of his powers. His signature weapon is the cross guarded lightsaber. J. J. Abrams has said that this type of lightsaber is considered a relic, and that he constructed it from old designs that he found.
