Fan theories: Where is Luke Skywalker?

Empire magazine has released a set of 6 new Star Wars: The Force Awakens covers (available Nov. 26th). Although the images are nice (and ideal to put an autograph on), it reminds us of the question many fans as asking: where is Luke? The fan theories are all over the place. But one thing is for sure. J. J. Abrams has deliberately left Luke Skywalker out of the promo pics for three reasons:
First to drive the fans crazy, second because finding him is a huge part of the plot and J. J. Abrams might have a huge plot twist or surprise in store for us. And last but not least, when it comes to old characters, The Force Awakens is clearly a Han Solo centric movie.

Keep reading to find out which are the top fan theories about Luke’s location and why he’s not in any promotional material (not even the movie posters).

Since we already know that Mark Hamill is reprising his role as Luke Skywalker in the upcoming Episode VII, the only thing left to uncover is how and when he is going to appear. So let’s review some theories that have broken the internet and the forums.

Theory #1: His appearance has been altered in an event that happened between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. This has led some fans of both Star Wars and of conspiracy theories to believe that Luke is none other than Kylo Ren (a bit of a stretch if you ask me). This would explain why Kylo Ren is played by Adam Driver and not Mark Hamill. Let’s hope this theory is wrong. This will outrage some (most) fans.

Theory #2: He is hiding because the new Jedi order he created was massacred by the Order of Ren and he doesn’t want to re-re-build it so it won’t happen again. This speculation has been based on a scene from the trailer (picture below). Since we know that there is going to be at least one flashback in the movie, fans believe that scene to be one of them.

Theory #3: He is guarding an ancient tomb that hides something powerful. Or even better, he is containing that power from being released into the galaxy. Being the most powerful force user in the galaxy makes him the ideal candidate to guard a power of that magnitude. But this means living in isolation since he can never leave the tomb unguarded. To make this theory a bit more fun, some fans have come up with the idea that only his lightsaber (Anakin’s) can open it, and that is why Kylo Ren wants it.

Theory #4: Like Yoda, he is in a self-imposed exile to keep the force in balance. If he is the only Jedi, and therefore on the light side of the force, then someone else just as powerful as he is should exist wielding the dark side powers.

Theory #5: The new Republic doesn’t want anything to do with the Jedi order. Even worse, they are “persona non-grata.” This idea gets too close to the (now non-cannon) novel "Exile" from "The Legacy of the Force" series. So, many fans are saying that J. J. might want to steer away from this idea so it won’t look like he is taking ideas from the books. To me, however, taking ideas from the books wouldn’t be that bad.

Theory #6: The dark side is tempting him so he must live free of all temptations and in communion with nature, just like Yoda did (but for different reasons).

Theory #7: Kylo Ren is Han and Leia's son!  Fans have theorized that the name Kylo (which is not the character's real name) comes from mixing both Han and Leia’s (real) last names (Skywalker + Solo).  So Luke could be in hiding to avoid another family feud. Or maybe Kylo Ren is his son! (again, a bit of a stretch).

Theory #8: Luke Skywalker is the mastermind behind the First Order. He is orchestrating a sort of plan to take over the galaxy (or at least the New Republic). Something like Palpatine was doing in the prequels. Or maybe a big bad boss like the Emperor in the original trilogy.

To make things more intriguing, Mark Hamill tweeted this yesterday

Last shaved on 10/22 after final day of my 2nd #TheFlash (which airs 12/8 #XmasTrix), just in time for Ep VIII-whew! https://t.co/UNsPDaqFT2

No matter what we all think, Luke’s absence from The Force Awakens merchandise, trailers and clip, is driving fans crazy. Just hold on for a few more days and we’ll know the answ
