Signed Star Wars

A blog about Star Wars autographs, celebrities and news from a galaxy far far away

Event: Rhode Island Comic Con

11/20/2015

On November 7th and 8th, we had the chance to attend Rhode Island Comic Con, meet with a few Star Wars celebrities and get some new autographs for our collection. Here are our impressions of the convention as well as some pictures from it.

The great thing about Rhode Island Comic Con is the number of celebrities attending the convention, not only from Star Wars, but from many other franchises. You have the chance to get autographs, talk to the celebrities, get a picture with them with your own camera or even get a professional photographer to take it. We got to meet with Jeremy Bulloch, Erick Bauersfeld, Tim Rose, Daniel Logan, David Prowse and Michael Carter.  We also met other non Star Wars related celebrities like Jason Momoa, Karen Gillan, Scott Wilson and Michael Rooker.

It was amazing meeting all of them (and I'll talk about these experiences in separate posts). Check out some of the pictures below or head to our Celebrities section to see a few more.

Our kids had a good time meeting R2-D2 and wearing their Star Wars costumes and dancing with some cosplayers, including a Luke Skywalker one. But the big surprise came when the kids spotted none other than Darth Vader while walking to the car.  As good Jedis (or Padawans, I should say) they ignited their lightsabers and went after him. We don't even know who was in the costume, but thank him for being a true Star Wars fan and giving my kids a fun memory.

I have to admit, I was a bit afraid after hearing the horror stories about last year's convention. Luckily, it seems that they have learned from their mistakes, but the convention didn't go without some mishaps. The biggest one for us was while I was in line waiting for photo ops. It seemed that the volunteers weren't well coordinated and instructed people waiting for the photo ops to go to buffer areas. Meanwhile, other volunteers started sending people (who arrived later) straight to the photo both). This happened to many people with many different celebrities.

It also felt a bit crowded from time to time and this could be an issue when you are attending the convention with kids.  But this happened mostly on Saturday, the busiest day of the convention.

We are sure the organizers will learn from these mistakes (as they have shown before) and improve this (already amazing) experience for the hundreds of fans that attend every year.

Take a look below at some pictures from the convention (not necessarily Star wars related).

Now, almost everything will cost you a few bucks. The only freebie was a picture with the iron throne at the Cox booth and the line wasn't even long. So you get a printed picture and a digital one for free. And that's actually great. Even my kids got a pic on throne and if you have kids, you know it's appropriate because they can be little tyrants some times ;)  Bottom line, between autographs, meeting celebrities, food (really expensive by the way), fan pictures, etc., you need a budget and a plan or you will definitely go overboard at a Con like this.

Finally, something that's important to me: attending RICC with my kids. You normally don't see that many people with kids at conventions, and RICC is not an exception. There are not that many activities for kids (although they have a "Kidscon area"). We took advantages of most of the activities for kids. Navigating the place with the stroller was difficult, crossing the "Skybridge" that connected both venues was quite an ordeal, and most people don't account for kids while walking crowded spaces. But the secret, in my opinion, is including them in all the other activities you do. After all, a Comic Con is just a big costume party for them and a chance to see their favorite characters come to life. Both my kids had a great time. Their favorite part was the "kids dance off" and of course the people in costumes. I think hey are getting to like RICC and probably will want to come back next year.
